Finally a few half decent photos of my Isabel de Requesens dress! At some point i’ll set up a nice backdrop with drapery and candles, but for right now these will have to do.

The costume was drafted, made, and worn by me. The design was based off of a painting created by Raphael and Gulio Romano in the early 1500s.

It’s made from linen and velvet. Aside from boning channels and skirt seams it was entirely hand sewn. The embroidery and beading were done by hand as well.

I have several detailed blog posts about the project, which can be found here, and a few videos on making it which are here

Why?

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a monument in dedication to the services of an unknown soldier, Marine, airman or sailor and to the common memories of all soldiers, Marines, airmen and sailors killed in any war. Throughout history, many soldiers have died in wars with their remains being unidentified. The tomb is guarded 24/7 365. Even through hurricanes as a sign of respect.

These soldiers stand guard, day and night, through blistering heat and freezing cold. They stand in driving rain without flinching. It is one of the highest honors to guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and there are no excuses, no rainy days. One year, a really bad hurricane swept through the coast and the soldiers were given permission to leave their post. They declined, choosing to stay and guard the tomb.
These men inspire me and have my utmost respect. Thank you.

after-crisis:

When I worked at a non-profit that handled suicide prevention, I had access to the donation records. Each month, a specific man donated 15$ to our organization. It was like clockwork.. same day, same man, he had been doing this for over 4 years. It always seemed odd to me but I never questioned it… until I saw a note attached one month. "For Noah- Dad"

his donation was once his child’s allowance.

I can promise you, they would miss you for the rest of their lives.
